How to look up a UK or Republic of Ireland company, understand your results, and use ongoing monitoring.
Company Check gives you a single report covering credit score, CCJs, insolvency history, director history, shareholders, group structure, and up to five years of financials — without leaving BrightChecks or using a separate credit agency site.
Each Company Check costs 12 BrightHub credits and covers UK and Republic of Ireland companies only.
How to run a Company Check
1. In BrightChecks, select Company Check.
2. Enter the company number, company name, and country (UK or Republic of Ireland).
3. Confirm and run the check. 12 credits will be deducted from your BrightHub wallet.
4. Your report will be ready shortly. You will also receive an email notification when it completes.
What your report includes
▪ Credit score and credit/contract limits
▪ County Court Judgement (CCJ) history
▪ Insolvency history
▪ Up to five years of filed financials
▪ Current and former directors — including dissolved directorships, which are flagged as a risk indicator
▪ Shareholders
▪ Group structure
Note: Group structures can be very large for major corporates. A large PLC may return hundreds of related companies across multiple countries. This is expected behaviour, not an error.
Understanding your result status
Every Company Check returns one of three statuses:
Passed — The company is active and trading normally.
Failed — The company is in liquidation, administration, or has been dissolved or struck off. This status is specifically about the company's legal standing — not its credit score or payment history.
Pending — The company's status is unclear and requires manual review.
Important: A company can have a low credit score, CCJs, or a poor payment history and still show as Passed. Passed and Failed reflect legal trading status only. Review the full report for the complete picture.
Ongoing monitoring
Free monitoring is switched on automatically for every Company Check. You do not need to opt in or do anything to activate it.
If a risk-relevant change is detected — such as a new CCJ, a director change, or a shift in risk score — you will receive an email alert naming the specific change.
Important: A monitoring alert does not update your original report. To get a refreshed report with the latest data, you will need to re-run the check. Re-running is chargeable at the standard 12 credits.
Can I turn monitoring off? There is no option to disable alerts while keeping the check record. The only way to stop monitoring is to delete the Company Check entirely — which also removes the report and its entry from your audit trail. If you are deleting a check for compliance reasons, make sure you have exported the report first.
Logging a risk rating
Once the check is complete, you can log a risk rating and rationale to document your assessment of the company's risk profile. This is recorded in your audit trail and can be exported for compliance purposes. The risk rating is optional — you can download the report without completing it.
